Sweet Corn Essentials

Whenever deciding for harvesting the sweet corn, follow the below mentioned instructions for planning.

Planning: Plant the corn directly after checking the soil and the temperature of soil. Nitrogen is very essential and the temperature approaching to 60°F.

Place the seeds indoors as two seeds in one peat pot from 3 – 4 week before the last hoarfrost date.

Gardening place should be planed also for getting better results. Choose a place where cross – pollination is incompatible. It will prevent the corn of big varieties from shading near crops.

When the plant is 8 to 10 inches tall and silks appears then side-dress the crop with manure containing the high element of nitrogen like 2 pounds of ammonium nitrate for per 100 feet of row.

If the leaves are becoming yellowish then there is a deficiency of nitrogen, immediately side-dress with manure, fish emulsion, commercial fertilizer or if available the combination of three.

Take control of COMMON CORN PESTS like corn earworms and European corn borers.

Harvesting: Harvesting of the sweet corn takes place, when the ears are totally filled out and showing milky while liquid.

The sweet corn loses the sweetness after the harvest so after picking suddenly prepare the ears for eating / preserving.

Dry the sweet corn for meal and popping as late as possible and then store.
